Christmas Tree

by

Do you have a Christmas/holiday tree at your house? I do and we enjoy putting it up every year along with the decorations for the season. I think it is an important part of living in a different culture and raising multi cultural kids to participate in such a celebration. It is great that you have lights on Diwali but it my view it is just as important to have decorations/ to mark Christmas.I was telling one of my friends about the tree. She said she did not believe in having a tree in her house. In her opinions Christmas is a religious celebration. So anything related to that like a tree, gifts etc is religious. As a non Christian, that is not the message she wants to give her child. She has explained to her child that they do not celebrate Christmas. What is your opinion? Should non Christians have a tree? Should Santa visit these kids?  Is having a tree following a different religion?

The first time I put up a Christmas tree and had santa bring presents was when my daughter was born and just a year old. At that time, we still lived in Bombay and this had nothing to do with being surrounded by Christmas celebrations. I just wanted to share the excitement that Santa brings for children. It reminded me of school days where Christmas was celebrated in our convent and it was enchanting to see the baubles and tinsel everywhere at school.

My kids love Christmas and are always waiting for December to arrive after all the Diwali excitement is over. It’s just another excuse to enjoy another festive season.

And religion does not seem to crop up in our celebrating Christmas at home.

Its interesting to observe the significance of the Christmas tree…and a Santa…..it all depends upon what Christmas meant to us as kids…….I love its colours….red, green and white….and what they stand for…hope, faith and charity.
I don’t encourage anything “Christmassy” at home, primarily because for Indian children living in the UK…the US…AUSTRALIA…even SE ASIA,….the exposure to this festival is huge! The sky-scraper high decorated trees….a Santa every 3 ft/on every newspaper page….the nativity scene with baby Jesus at major crossings…the never-ending carols(beautiful…..but perhaps endless)….is perhaps an overdose?!?!…..this festive period is both extensive AND intensive ….and somehow dwarfs every other festival…..!
