Hi Vinita,

I was your student at NICMAR back in 1989-1991. How are you doing? Somehow I was going through my old memories and your name came across.
Would be very happy to communicate to you.

Thanks,

Vinita,
This is a very interesting topic. I heard Mohammed Yunus on NPR a few days ago and he talks about "Social Business"
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18008873
In my opinion a non-profit should not lose its competitive edge and become dependent on fund-raising alone (it should work on creating a revenue source). Business done with altruistic intent does as much if not more for the community.
Congratulations on the blog and the newsletter. Thank you for your service to the community.

Its interesting to observe the significance of the Christmas tree...and a Santa.....it all depends upon what Christmas meant to us as kids.......I love its colours....red,green and white....and what they stand for...hope,faith and charity.
I don't encourage anything "Christmassy" at home, primarily because for Indian children living in the UK...the US...AUSTRALIA...even SE ASIA,....the exposure to this festival is huge! The sky-scraper high decorated trees....a Santa every 3 ft/on every newspaper page....the nativity scene with baby Jesus at major crossings...the never-ending carols(beautiful.....but perhaps endless)....is perhaps an overdose?!?!.....this festive period is both extensive AND intensive ....and somehow dwarfs every other festival.....!

The first time I put up a Christmas tree and had santa bring presents was when my daughter was born and just a year old. At that time, we still lived in Bombay and this had nothing to do with being surrounded by Christmas celebrations. I just wanted to share the excitement that Santa brings for children. It reminded me of school days where Christmas was celebrated in our convent and it was enchanting to see the baubles and tinsel everywhere at school.

My kids love Christmas and are always waiting for December to arrive after all the Diwali excitement is over. It's just another excuse to enjoy another festive season.

And religion does not seem to crop up in our celebrating Christmas at home.

Here are some ideas we are working on - An idea for the near future is to have photograph albums on our website - as you suggested - to show pictures of real people celebrating feativals and other important occasions. We have a picture album for Holi - a friend generously donated her family pictures and we will share it with our readers soon. Maybe some of our readers would like to send us pictures and photographs?

I think you are doing an excellent job with the newsletter. The links are very useful and the site is very hands on, even for my 9 year old. The holiday newsletter with ideas of compiling family stories was really nice and we did manage to get a few. The kids can add to them on every visit to India.I still need to accomplish the success at my end where I fit going through the newsletters each month amongst all the childrens activities and play times with friends.

Introducing some of the famous Indians (historically and today) would be nice every once in a while. We have zero Indian history covered at school level.

Its a bit late this month, we have been working on Diwali celebrations at our school and I am trying to source pictures which would show the kids how the festival is celebrated in India today. Also, does anyone know a source for getting the ramayan character face masks in India? I came across a school using paper mache ones which was a fantastic way of narrating the story of Diwali.

Vinita,

Amazing story! Most parents or grandparents wish to teach an Indian language to their children because the language is what carries their cultural habits.

Its interesting and amusing to see your humane response. Maybe you can partner with the people who brought Incredibles dubbed in Hindi to bring content to your site.

I am glad you started the blog, it brings out your passion for this work, good luck and we'd love to see more of your work. Let us readers know how exactly we can help with this project.

Thanks,
Sudha
